Susan Saandholland Artist Statement Medium: photography presented on aluminum, glass and fine art paper
Photography is often perceived as one step removed from experience. We take pictures of an event, scene or person and the result is a reflection of something that happened a moment or a lifetime ago. Yet, when you look at a photograph that resonates with any part of your senses, your memory or your limbic system, that in itself is an immediate event.
My photographs are often fast unconscious trappings of a momentary experience with light. Often I don't even know why or what I have captured until I see it in a different time, place or frame of mind. It is jazz, an improve of dance, mechanics, and editing, but most of all a desire to share some moment experienced in and out of the frame. When shooting I am aware that like athletes, soldiers or piano students who drill, the necessary motions and techniques are deeply embedded and the resulting photograph is often a surprise.
I hope you enjoy these reflections of the light as it bounces from sun to sensor to retina to computer, printer and finally to your unique experience.
